St Christopher's Legend

st_christopher_194

There is almost nothing historical is known about the life and death of St. Christopher, but there are many legends attributed to him. The most popular one is The Golden Legend by Archbishop Jacobus de Voragine in 1480

According to the legend, St Christopher was 12 cubits (18 ft) tall, fearsome faced Canaanite warrior named Reprobus who while serving a king of Canaan went on a quest to find the mightiest ruler to serve.

He found the king who was reputed to be the greatest, but one day he noticed that the king crossed himself at the mention of the devil. By thus St Christopher learned that the devil is greater and he departed to look for him.

St Christopher came across a marauder who declared himself to be the devil and began serving him. But not long after St Christopher saw that the devil avoids a wayside cross fearing Christ.

When St Christopher went on a quest to find Christ he met a hermit and asked him how he could serve Christ. The hermit suggested fasting and prayer, but St Christopher replied that he was unable to perform that service. Then the hermit then suggested that St Christopher could serve Christ by assisting people to cross a dangerous river and that this service would be pleasing to Christ.

After performing this service for some time, a little child asked St Christopher to take him across the river. The river became swollen and the child seemed as heavy as lead and St Christopher had great difficulty carrying him across. When they finally crossed the river, he said to the child: "You have put me in the greatest danger. I do not think the whole world could have been as heavy on my shoulders as you were." The child replied: "You had on your shoulders not only the whole world but him who made it. I am Christ your king, whom you are serving by this work." The child then vanished.

According to tradition, St. Christopher died a martyr in Lycia in 251 A.D. during the reign of Decius, a Roman Emperor who conducted the first systematic persecution of Christians.

The king tried to bribe St. Christopher by riches and by sending beautiful women to make him sacrifice to the pagan gods, but St. Christopher refused and was decapitated.

On island of Rab in Croatia one of the city's largest medieval squares is named after the saint. The legend tells that when Normans besieged the city, the relics were placed on the city walls and miraculously, the winds changed and the bows and ships were blown away from the city.

St Christophers real story

According to some sources, St Christopher was born in Marmarica North Africa. After been captured by Diocletian emperor's Army in late 301 and early 302, he was sent to Roman garrison in Syria where he was baptised by bishop Peter of Alexandria. St Christopher was martyred on 9 July 308 at Antioch in Syria.
